Jharkhand: 3-year-old dies in mother's arms after hospital refuses ambulance

Ranchi: A case of administrative apathy has come to the fore from Jharkhand.

A three-year-old child died in her mother's arms in Jharkhand's Gumla area, while she was taking him home 40 kms away on foot after Sadar Hospital allegedly refused an ambulance.

Meanwhile, denying any lapses from the authorities side, Dr RN Yadav, who is associated with the hospital said, the child was being treated at the hospital, but they later found that his mother had taken him away.

A Police officer said that a woman along with her kid was seen on the road. People had gathered around her and helped her financially to get a tempo back home.

World Bank assures ‘neutrality’ in India, Pakistan talks over Indus Waters Treaty

The World Bank has assured its continued neutrality and impartiality in helping India and Pakistan find an “amicable way forward” during talks over issues related to two of India’s hydroelectricity projects under Indus Waters Treaty.

Welcoming the participation of India and Pakistan in the talks to be held here tomorrow, World Bank’s Vice President for South Asia region Annette Dixon said, “We are pleased both parties have confirmed their participation in the meeting hosted by the World Bank in Washington, DC.”

Pakistan had approached the World Bank last year, raising concerns over the designs of the two hydroelectricity projects located in Jammu and Kashmir.

It demanded that the World Bank, which is the mediator between the two countries under the 57-year-old water distribution pact, set up a court of arbitration to look into its concerns.

On the other hand, India asked for appointments of a neutral expert to look into the issues, contending the concerns Pakistan raised were “technical” ones.

Following this, the international lender had in November 2016 initiated two simultaneous processes - for appointing neutral expert and establishment of court of arbitration - to look into technical differences between the two countries in connection with the project.

The simultaneous processes, however, were halted after India objected to it.

After that, representatives of the World Bank held talks with India and Pakistan to find a way out separately.

China resorting to coercive practices to achieve goals: CIA

Washington: China is increasingly resorting to "coercive, assertive practices" to achieve its goals in the Asia-Pacific region, as seen in the disputed the South China Sea, a senior official of the US foreign intelligence service said.

The remarks from Michael Collins, Deputy Assistant Director at the Central Intelligence Agency's East Asian Mission Centre, came as the Pentagon yesterday said that a US Navy surveillance aircraft was intercepted on Sunday by two Chinese J-10 fighters in an "unsafe" manner over the disputed the East China Sea.

The OBOR is an ambitious Chinese plan to link the country to Africa and Europe through several trade corridors.

According to Bonnie Glaser, senior adviser for Asia and the director of China Power Project, Centre for Strategic and International Studies, the Chinese are trying to organise the regions in a way that it is more Sino-centric, where China can prevail and can essentially compel other nations in the region to put Chinas interest first and show deference to China.

"That is a major challenge for the US," he said.

"We have to think about China not just in terms of discrete issues like North Korea or cyber as we have talked about at this conference, but more of a global challenge, and we need more of a whole of government strategy to deal with the growing strategic competition between the US and China. The competition is inevitable; war is not," Glaser said.

US top court rejects Donald Trump's bid to include grandparents in travel ban

Washington: The US Supreme Court rejected on Wednesday a bid by President Donald Trump to include grandparents and other relatives in his travel ban on people from six Muslim-majority countries.

But in a partial win for Trump, the court gave the government more leeway to enforce a separate ban on refugees that was included in a March 6 executive order the president said was necessary for national security.

The Supreme Court said then that the bans could take effect, but that people with a "bona fide relationship" to a U.S. person or entity could not be barred.

The administration had narrowly interpreted that language, saying the ban would apply to grandparents and other family members, prompting the state of Hawaii to ask Hawaii-based U.S. District Judge Derrick Watson to expand the definition of who could be admitted. He ruled for the state late on Thursday.

In his decision, Watson harshly criticised the government`s definition of close family relations as "the antithesis of common sense."

Watson also ruled that the assurance by a resettlement agency to provide basic services to a newly arrived refugee constitutes an adequate connection to the United States because it is a sufficiently formal and documented agreement that triggers responsibilities and compensation.

Gone, red beacon as well as Shahi Imam post - Tipu Sultan Mosque authorities sack Maulana Noor-ur Rehman Barkati

Kolkata: Days after openly defying the Centre's order and stating that he would keep using the red beacon on his vehicle, the Tipu Sultan Mosque trustee board sacked Shahi Imam Maulana Noor-ur Rehman Barkati for "objectionable and inflammatory remarks against the country".

Notably, Barkati had recently threatened 'jihad' and refused to take off the beacon from his vehicle.

A police complaint was lodged against Barkati by the Board on Monday in Bowbazar police station for forcefully snatching away the keys of the mosque's official room.

A number of police complaints were also lodged against the Imam in different police stations of Bengal.

Later, the Kolkata Police officers visited Barkati and the red beacon was removed from his car.

He had also drawn flak for commenting that Muslims would "fight for Pakistan if India became a Hindu state".

His comments led to a hue and cry, with the BJP and other Sangh Parivar outfits dubbing him "anti-national" and senior West Bengal minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury, regarded as a prominent face of the ruling Trinamool Congress, calling Barkati an RSS agent.
